The other day was so incredible and warm that I took my dog (I'm sure you've all met Gunther) to our local Visual Arts Center here in Bowmanville where we have a kiddy park, baseball diamonds etc,,, to toss the ball around. I took him to a fairly secluded area and played for about 30 minutes with the ball while two families having a picnic enjoyed the unusually warm winter's end when suddenly Gunther's nose rises up high in the air and before I could stop him ignored the tossed ball and purposefully headed for the family area where the people had just finished eating and had their kids on the swings. I watched in horror as he ignored everyone around him and went directly to the picnic on the ground and started to scoff down the remnants of their lunch. Oh my ,,,,, I yelled and screamed and he couldn't hear me over the kids squeals of glee as they pointed him out to their parents! Embarrassment...... to the max! I, of course, could not apologize enough as I glasped the leash back on him and led him away to the car. While on the trip home though,,, I swear he was smiling and I believe he politely muffled a quiet burp! Hmmmmm

Not a very good photo,,, indoors with incandescent bulb lighting but finally he is done.... not sure yet of the official title but for now he is still 'King Gunther the 8th'. I thought I'd never be done with this one. It was a tough go because it contains an awful lot of detail and is done on quite a large canvas. In the meantime I also did an impressionist style marketplace and also a northern pine tree in the Muskoka area and my first attempt at palette knife painting, a sugar shack. Those I will post when I get proper photos done as well. I have had a really incredible day in the studio finishing both the marketplace and Gunther,,, now I have to get started on a commission piece for a fella at work. It is a lighthouse on the east coast that he indeed took a photo of that was published in a magazine..... I think I've kinda been avoiding this one as it is not for me so I want it perfect. I don't put any demands on myself now,,,do I???? haha I'm sure you all know what I am referring to. Hope you all have a nice weekend. :>)

My model is getting a little miffed with me.... he is tired of posing and now is insisting I take him for a walk or suffer the 'consequences'..... :>) whatever could that mean...hmmmmm. Anyway... finally back the the big easel today and back to work on my series. King Gunther the 8th (I really need a good title for that one) is closing in on the big finish,,, I'm thinking maybe another 2 sessions or probably about 12 more hours. I am so ready to start a new one. In the meantime I have finished a couple of landscapes but even though I quite like them they are not nearly as much fun as my Gunther series but not nearly as daunting. I am so aware of myself avoiding the work,,, you know the story,,, goes something like this,,, hmmmmm,,,,, got to get to work now,,,oh yeah, better check my emails first,, oops, need another cup of coffee, should call the dentist about that appointment too, jeez, coffee going right through me today,,, gotta take the dog for a walk,,,etc, etc, etc,,,,! I am sure we have all done that...:>) Oh well, back to work,,, hmmmm, maybe I should go get the mail first and then..... ;>)

There is still so much to do with this next piece in the Gunther series. I finally finished up the background and his face and hat feather are pretty well done,, as is the piece around his neck with the jewels on it... I'll probably freshen that up again. I recoated his hat so when that is almost dry I will add the pearls and jewels to that as well. Seems to me I am avoiding the cloth of his outfit pretty good,,,, it is going to be quite a fancy flouncy design and I have never attempted anything, ever, like that so I am somewhat hesitant to get started on it..... though I'm pretty sure I can handle the fur.... we shall see.
The sun is definitely throwing it's light around for a little bit longer each day so I actually painted right up until almost 5 pm today,,, what a thrill that was. I hate these 'daylight' lights in the studio here but for now they will have to do,,, you can actually see the affects in the WIP photo attached here... the regular studio lights are on the right side of work and the yucky ones (daylight) are hitting the left side. The left side is much truer to the actual color while the other side is not. This photo was taken at 8:45 tonight with no flash on my camera. So for now the yucky 'daylight' bulbs will remain but I am working on finding another source of light for evening work. Maybe one of you good people could come up with a better idea regarding the lighting of a north facing studio in the dead of winter when the sun is so far south. ???????? What is the best lighting for trueness in colour?

Wow,,, this is a lot of work,,, I've been working all day on his hat feathers and his jewels on his clothing.... still need to do all the cloth stitch work and tons of other stuff. I also have to redo the background after messing it up so I may make it a little bluer. BUT,,,, (and that is a big but...haha) his face is done,,, I needed to get that done first so I would enjoy the process that much more. I need a good title too......hmmmmmmmmm....... :>)

Oh dear,,,, Gunther used his 'higher' education to get himself crowned King Gunther the 8th!
Well thank goodness I am well on my way into the second piece of my first series and I already have an idea for the next identity Gunther will portray. I think it will be the best one so far,,, but it is still a long way off since I consider myself to be only about a quarter of the way finished with the 'king',,,, haha.... he is still very flat and I have only done the preliminary work on his 'costume'..... it is a very ornate one with many jewels, fur, satin, silk and of course gold thread,,, which should be a riot. If ya hear any screaming coming from north of the border just ignore it,,, it is only I. Oh yes,,, and a feather in his 'cap',,,aaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhrrrrrr! It is still a lot of fun though... :>)
This was definitely a tough start though,,,, in case you don't know this it is based on the 1540 Hans Holbein portrait of a young Henry the 8th and I of course have been somewhat concerned with all that copyright stuff which of course I know very little but many things will be changed so I believe I am in the clear. Either way it will get done if only for myself anyway... :>) Well,,, I think I have painted enough for today... I have installed daylight bulbs everywhere in the studio and I hate them,,,, like working in florescent light yuck,,,, but once the sun goes down they do play havoc with my eyes. I manage to paint a little longer though so I think they were worth it. I will be glad when the sun sits higher in the sky and the days grow longer again.... HEAVEN!!! I did notice it got dark a bit later today so I must be patient. Hope you are all well and are all painting yourselves silly..... take care! ;>)

Having trouble getting started with my next work in my Gunther series,,,, I am feeling quite scared.... what if I can't do it again? Where do I start? Yikes!!
January 2nd, 2010
What a start,,,, I feel incredible! I was honored with being the first Artist Pick of the Day with 1st Angel Arts Magazine by Veronica Holmes for this year,,, heck for this new decade! Wow, that is so cool. I also have an opening tomorrow here in Bowmanville for an exhibit at the library..... things are happening fast. I hope I can keep this momentum going for a bit longer and hopefully manage to snag a sale or two. My buddy Karen Masters has also been busy with some more sales and she is just flying along now,,, I am so happy for her! She needs and deserves it for sure.
The only snag to all this is coming up with another in the 'Gunther' series that will be as nice as the first.... here comes in the confidence or lack of it. I just have to believe in myself and that it is not just all happy accidents with a brush and paint. I can do this,,,, yes I can! Ah well,,,, we'll see,,,, ooops, letting a little self doubt creep in. Maybe that isn't so bad... I am a bit of a perfectionist. Haha,,, have a nice night all! XOXO

Yahoo,,, I did it!! I finished my first Gunther portrait in the series I am planning. I am really, really pleased with the outcome and am already in the planning stages for the next one. What a challenge it was but just so much fun looking into the face of a creature I adore so much. I think the 'aha' moment came when I placed the light in his eyes.... that was the moment I surprised myself that I could reproduce his likeness so accurately. What fun!
On another note,, I have an exhibition opening this Sunday at our local library,,, well, actually a hanging and an opening right after. I am a little nervous since I had completed the work several months ago so I am feeling a little out of touch with it... oh well, I'm sure it will be ok. I am actually one of 6 artists and we call ourselves The Haydon Five. (don't ask,, hahaha)
Anyway,,, I'm hoping and wishing for a safe and happy new year for everybody!! TTYL XOXO
PS. Apparently my photo is too big so you will have to go to my site to see it,,, sorry. ;>(

My first bit of work on this new computer.... I've started a new series, I intend to do a dozen or so and may take a long, long time,,, and here is the first work in progress. I'm not entirely sure of the title yet but it is my dog Gunther getting his doctorate in philosophy. I already have one photo that I have called One Smart Doodle but I'm not sure how I will go with this one.... I will see. I have many more ideas and pictures in my mind for him and am very excited about it. I find myself giggling over and over as I work on him so I definitely am pleased with this work,,, let's just say it makes me VERY happy!! LOL :>)
I can see him as many, many important historical figures and intend to do a dozen or so..... maybe more..haha... as for the time being,,, I will just have him be him. :>)
As far as the actual work goes, I am finished the robe and hat except for the tassels, now I need to finish his paw, face and of course his glasses. This is the first time I have ever worked on anything like robes,,, especially velvet,, so this was a challenge for sure but so much laughter as I worked. I hope you like him,,, TTYL.
Having trouble sending photo,,, too big! I am trying to downsize it.... losing a lot of it but it's a start haha.
